Research-based tech companies are super strong. From Finland we have companies such as Relex, Nightingale, Callstats.io, Iceye and our own recent investments such as Selko.io, Cerenion, Ladimo and Roadcloud that have all been built from university research. At Tech Research Showcase we create opportunities for researchers to get visibility for their work and connect with potential Co-founders.
The event was held last week at Helsinki Think Corner with Think Company co-organizing the event with us. We had 11 incredible research projects presented. We also had Johanna Småros, Co-founder of Relex and Suvi Ellilä, Co-founder of Selko.io telling their stories about creating strong research-based tech companies in our Fireside chat. We were completely overwhelmed by the potential of the research projects and the quality of the presentations.
Below you can find short descriptions of what was presented. If you are interested in getting in touch with the researchers, reach out to them or join the Icebreaker.vc community here to get more information.
MACULASER novel therapy for age-related macular degeneration
Maculaser project develops novel medical technology for treatment of common eye-disease, age-related macular degeneration (AMD). AMD is the leading cause of blindness in the developed world, with total direct healthcare system cost of 200 billion euros annually. Currently there is no effective treatment for the most common form of the disease.
Matti's team challenges the way osteoarthritis is diagnosed today. There is no cure in the market at the moment. Morphologic is currently the only method to determine and detect OA directly from 3D data.
Low Cost and Printable Perovskite Solar Cells
Ghufran's team has found a solution for low-cost solar energy. They have developed a novel way to use Perovskite as a light absorbing material for solar cell, providing a cheaper and much more flexible solarcell solution than before.
Brain-Controlled Ankle Foot Orthosis
Amin's team has developed an AI-based method to control a bionic-hand with the thought of movement. The team has already managed to control a humanoid artificial hand and a remote car.
Low-cost Adaptive Robotic Gripper
Robots don’t have human grasping capabilities and human touch, and that's where industrial robots come into the picture. Andrijas solution is advancing gripper technology - the key to unlocking a new age of automation.
Hurricane Unwinder makes an improved forecast for hurricane intensity by applying machine learning on high-resolution satellite images. The long-term goal is to understand hurricane intensity well enough to downgrade it when needed.
Quantized health tracking device
Heart rate variability (HRV) is already used to assess rest, training etc. – with many gadgets and apps. However, dynamic correlations in HRV have not yet been exploited. But, this team's algorithms can capture the dynamic correlations in HRV with extreme accuracy to improve performance and health.
Outsmarting Antimicrobial Resistance
Christopher's team is working on the problem of the severe lack of new antibiotics. They have developed a new way to combat antibiotic resistance.
Surface-enhanced biomedical imaging (SEBI)
There is a major drawback of the present optical biomedical imaging worldwide due to the lack of sensitivity to see the details of cells. Seeing the invisible has not been easy, cheap and nor possible- until now. The team has recently discovered that by engineering the surface on which the biomaterials are mounted it is possible to enhance the signal sensitivity ~100-fold compared to the plain coverslip glass.
Rare-disease models on a chip
Current research models in the lab are not sufficient for discovering cures for 7000+ rare diseases. But Prateek has a solution: Biomimetic culture systems, a precision design for replicating the diseases in a miniature lab device.
Talent identification in soccer
With machine learning methods, it is possible to include a large set of variables and to find their non-linear relations in the data. An independent test data is used to confirm the validity of the solution.
- Thanks for yet another successful Tech Research Showcase event- 👋
